Northwestern Wildcats Paint “The Great White Way” Purple!

Sixty-three Northwestern passengers traveled to New York City, March 28 – April 1, 2008, for Northwestern’s Broadway Weekend in New York City tour. The tour highlighted Broadway shows that featured Northwestern alumni or faculty and included interactive discussions led by Dominic Missimi, professor of theatre and executive director of the American Music Theatre Project

The tour participants began the tour with a welcome reception and dinner and then attended the hit production of Legally Blonde, The Musical. On Saturday morning, the passengers enjoyed breakfast and a discussion with Mary Beth Peil (Mu62) and Thomas Murray (WCAS89/Mu89). Peil plays “mother” in the current Broadway revival of Sunday in the Park with George, and Murray is the musical conductor for the production. The group attended the matinee of Sunday in the Park with George, and later that evening attended either Xanadu with actor Tony Roberts (C61) or the critically acclaimed play August: Osage County, directed by Northwestern Professor Anna D. Shapiro and featuring Sally Murphy (GMu84) in the cast.

Sunday morning the group participated in an engaging discussion with Anna Shapiro, associate professor and director of the MFA directing program at Northwestern’s School of Communication. Later that afternoon, tour passengers enjoyed Young Frankenstein, the new Mel Brooks musical featuring Fred Applegate (C77). Monday’s events were the highlights of the tour, as passengers participated in the “Lunch With Northwestern’s Broadway Stars” at Sardi’s Restaurant, where they ate lunch with a cross section of Northwestern alumni actors, directors, producers, composers, writers, and music directors. That evening, passengers attended the NAA’s A Night With Northwestern in NY: Expect the Unexpected, a variety show directed, produced, and presented by alumni, involving more than 80 alumni volunteers, and attended by more than 640 people.
