Small is Big in the Midwest

"Small is Big" in the Midwest

Nearly 100 alumni and friends of Northwestern attended the “Northwestern Explores: Small is Big” programs in the Twin Cities (Sept. 30) and Indianapolis (Oct. 1). With so much news focus this election year on genetics and stem cell research, participants were eager to hear what our Northwestern professors had to say on these hot topics.

The receptions at each event offered an opportunity to relax at the end of the day, to meet new and old friends, and to pick the brains of the professors. In addition, the Q&A sessions at the end of the programs were very dynamic and could have continued well into the evening!

Here’s what some alumni had to say following the programs:

"Our three presenters were very credible with excellent credentials and yet made their topics easily understood by us laymen and relative novices to their sciences. Erudite and understandable – a great combination!" – Kay Millar (J63)

"The program was intellectually stimulating and the speakers were outstanding!" - Ed Baker (KSM82)

"Hearing these professors, and realizing how critical their work is to our collective future, makes me remember why I went to Northwestern in the first place, and why I'm so proud to be an alum." - JoEllen Bendall (J80)

"These professors not only have knowledge, but personality, as well. And, they take a set of very complex topics and make them understandable. They kept an audience spellbound for 2 and one half hours on a Friday night, and it could have gone longer. Great performance." - Fred Schlegel (WCAS63)

"All three of these professors are brilliant, leaders in their own fields who research cutting edge science that will have a tremendous impact on our health in the future." - Lisa Ludvig (McC97, G02)

"Great science results from synergistic, cross-disciplinary thinking. By bringing its distinguished faculty together to allow its alumni to participate in Northwestern’s ongoing exploration of the inter-relationships amongst cutting edge genetics, stem cell research and nano-chemistry at the atomic level, Northwestern demonstrates the continuing commitment to an integrated approach to innovation, research, and teaching which has kept it at the forefront of institutions of higher learning worldwide." - David Russell (L76)

Northwestern Explores will next present "Small is Big" in Houston, Texas, on February 16, 2004 - watch the NAA Web site for details.
