Michael Kocour explores the artistic process in our American contribution to art music as well as its history and the "Giants of Jazz," such as John Coltrane, Duke Ellington, Thelonious Monk, Charlie Parker, and many others. Live performances by members of the Northwestern University Jazz program enable viewers to experience first hand, the wondrous sounds of this great musical tradition.

About the Presenter

Michael Kocour
Senior Lecturer, Music Performance Studies

Hailed by the Chicago Tribune as "one of the most sophisticated pianists in jazz," Michael Kocour is a senior lecturer in Jazz Studies at Northwestern University and a pianist/arranger who has performed at the 1992 World’s Fair in Seville, the Jazz Showcase in Chicago, the Blue Note in New York, and the Chicago, Montreal and Quebec City Jazz festivals. Among the many artists and ensembles with whom he has appeared are Dizzy Gillespie, James Moody, Eddie Daniels, Benny Golson, and the Chicago Symphony.

His recorded work as a studio musician includes soundtracks to two major motion pictures, and numerous television commercials. He has eight works published by Warner Brothers, which include collections of original compositions and arrangements for piano. In addition, Mr. Kocour frequently performs around the Chicago area.

In recognition of excellence in teaching, Mr. Kocour was awarded the position of the Charles Deering McCormick University Distinguished Lecturer for the academic year 2000-2001.
