How NEXT Works
If you're a Northwestern undergraduate student and you are interested in an oppportunity to get an inside view of a career field you are interested in, NEXT is for you! The purpose of NEXT is to connect current undergraduate students with Northwestern alumni for a one day job-shadowing experiences, called externships. An externship allows you to explore a potential future career, and connect with an alum who has been in your shoes and wants to help guide you in the right direction. Sound tempting? Here is what you need to do:
- Read the NEXT FAQ for full details regarding the nature, timing, and governing guidelines of NEXT externships. Know the facts before you take the leap.
- See who's out there. Visit the NAA ONLINE FORUMS, to see what opportunities alumni have made available to Northwestern undergraduate students.
- Apply for up to FIVE externship opportunites that you are interested in between the dates of January 14-25. THE APLICATION PERIOD IS NOW CLOSED.
- Wait patiently. At the close of the student application period, NEXT alumni hosts will receive submissions and will choose the student or students who, in their judgment, will benefit the most from their experience.
- Check your e-mail. NEXT matches will be announced via e-mail between February 25-29, 2008.
- Make your arrangements. Once the announcements are made, hosts and externs are responsible for planning the externship on a mutually agreeable date between March 21 and April 21, 2008. It is the students responsibility to initiate communications with the host to get the planning started.
- Attend one pre-externship training session. All externs are required to attend an informative University Career Services/Northwestern Alumni Association seminar designed to help everyone get the most out of their externships. Training dates are will be announced soon.
- Visit the student FAQ page for more answeres. If you still have questions please e-mail next@alumni.northwestern.edu.
